History of the language

Francorium reads today’s French alongside the dictionaries that witnessed it: Littré (1873, with its 1877 supplement) and the Académie française (1935) — with more witnesses to come.

The witnesses

temps · chat · gabarit · auge

Vanished words

Words attested in the historical witnesses but absent from Francorium’s contemporary nomenclature keep a full entry, clearly marked. Absence from the nomenclature does not by itself prove the word has left the language entirely.

Dated citations

Littré’s citations now carry their authors’ dates — from Malherbe to Hugo — anchoring each sense in its century.
